Nature Gets Up Close and Personal at Bluebonnet Swamp

View All Kids Activities

The Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center invites visitors of all ages to explore the unique ecology of the Baton Rouge region through hands-on learning and close — yet safe — encounters with birds, bats, foxes and other native wildlife. A focal point of the 103-acre preserve is the 9,500-square-foot nature center. Colorful learning stations encourage youngsters to touch items like snakeskins, pelts, leaves and feathers to incorporate a sensory experience into the learning process. There are also live exhibits of snakes, turtles and other creatures and even a working beehive that allow visitors to experience as many aspects of nature as possible.

Outside the center, more than a mile of gravel paths and boardwalks wind through a cypress-tupelo swamp and hardwood forest teeming with birds, squirrels and rabbits. Deer and coyotes are known to visit the site as well.

Programming for children includes weekly hikes for ages 2 to 5, after-dark hikes by flashlight and occasional “dog days” that invite leashed pooches to hit the trail with their owners. Additional children’s events include Halloween- and bat-themed activities, as well as free classes in swamp-centric cultural traditions like carving waterfowl decoys. Popular summer and holiday camps feature crafts, hikes and interactive learning.
