Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge is a four-year institution that offers 33 undergraduate degrees, 16 master’s degrees and six doctoral degrees. Southern University is a historically black college and recently celebrated its 100-year anniversary in early 2014. The institution’s student enrollment is more than 5,000. Popular degree programs include:

Southern is particularly known for its nursing programs. The School of Nursing has won the Louisiana State Nurses Association’s Nursing School of the Year award twice and is among the top 10 producers of African American nurses in the country.
Student life is a major part of Southern’s culture. Students can participate in numerous clubs, Greek life and student government. The Southern Jaguars and Lady Jaguars, the university’s athletic teams, receive an outpouring of student support each year and compete in the NCAA Southwest Athletic Conference. Southern’s most anticipated event of the year is the Bayou Classic, the annual football and marching band faceoff against Grambling State University at the Mercedez-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
