Baton Rouge, a Thriving Cultural Center

View All Arts & Music

With more than a dozen museums and cultural venues, Baton Rouge offers residents numerous opportunities to explore regional art through exhibits and educational centers.

Housed within the Shaw Center for the Arts in downtown Baton Rouge, the LSU Museum of Art is one of the largest university-run art museums in the South. Spanning 17,000 square feet and housing more than 3,500 works of art created anywhere from the 17th to the 21st centuries, the museum contains a diverse collection of artwork that ranges from paintings and sculptures to photography. The LSU Museum of Art hosts guided field trips throughout the year, allowing students to learn more about the arts through tours and activities.

Arts in the downtown Baton Rouge area are supported by local business leaders, artists, studios and galleries. In 2008, this group formed an Arts & Entertainment District dedicated to providing a means for growth and development through arts-and-entertainment-related activities, as well as tax free shopping for art.

Forum 35, a young professionals’ organization, established Art Melt the largest multi-media, juried art exhibit in the state of Louisiana. Art Melt strives to promote professional artists throughout the state of Louisiana while providing an opportunity for the public to experience the best of local fine art, music and performing arts.

Another popular local art venue is the Baton Rouge Gallery: Center for Contemporary Art, with monthly exhibitions of work by its artist members, as well as hosting regional and national juried exhibitions. Located in City Park, Baton Rouge Gallery features works in a range of media, including photography, stained glass, ceramics and sculpture. The Gallery is a popular venue for special engagements and programs like Music and Movies on the Lawn, private parties and weddings, and ARTiculate, Baton Rouge Gallery's monthly artist talk series.
