Louisiana’s capital is also home to Baton Rouge General Medical Center, a two-campus hospital that was the first medical center in the city. The hospital has grown substantially over the years to meet the needs of the community; the first open heart surgery in the city was conducted in 1958, and in the same year, began the diabetes program. The hospital also built the first burn center in the area, where patients are treated for flame, scald, electrical, chemical and other injuries pertaining to burns.
