Baton Rouge Taxes

Affordability and smart investments are available in the Capital Region.

Anchored by the city of Baton Rouge, Louisiana’s Capital Region is home to nine parishes that collectively contribute to a strong quality of life for residents.

Property taxes in Baton Rouge are some of the most homeowner-friendly in the country, giving meaning to the phrase “bang for your buck.” A non-partisan tax research group, Tax Foundation, ranked Louisiana’s total tax burden as fifth lowest in the United States in 2015.

Homeowners in the region automatically qualify for Louisiana’s homestead exemption on their primary residence. Through the exemption, the first $75,000 of assessed value is not taxed. Combined with no state property tax on primary residences, the state’s homestead exemption makes Louisiana eighth lowest in the country for property taxes, according to 2015 Tax Foundation research data.

Local sales taxes may fluctuate, but Louisiana’s statewide sales tax rate of four percent is one of the 13 lowest in the country. Baton Rouge tax dollars are often invested in areas such as mass transit, libraries, schools and public works.

In 2005, the city of Baton Rouge and East Baton Rouge Parish residents voted overwhelmingly in support of a dedicated half-cent sales and use tax to fund a $920 million street and road improvements program known as the Green Light Plan. With 60 individual projects ranging from road capacity development and the construction of connector roadways to intersection upgrades — with sidewalk and neighborhood beautification initiatives — the program ensures Smart Growth principles are applied to Baton Rouge’s roads and infrastructure and the expansion is aligned with both present and future transportation needs.
