The Baton Rouge area is home to a strong, vibrant economy and low cost of living that work together to make the region a great place to live, work and play. In 2014, with a total composite score of 94.6, the Council for Community and Economic Research ranked Baton Rouge well below the national average and many other southern U.S. cities for overall cost of living, including Atlanta and Houston.
The region’s low housing costs are a primary reason why it is so affordable to live in the Baton Rouge area – from popular communities near Louisiana State University to more suburban neighborhoods that provide residents with easy access to regional amenities and popular shopping centers. Louisiana’s homestead exemption also provides homeowners with a tax advantage to owning a home in the state. Through this homeowner-friendly tax policy, residents are not required to pay property taxes on the first $75,000 of their primary residence, helping to set Baton Rouge apart from other cities without comparable property tax policies such as Houston and Chicago.
The region’s housing advantages extend beyond the city of Baton Rouge. In 2013, Coldwell Banker Real Estate ranked Prairieville, a fast-growing community in Ascension Parish, No. 2 for “Top Booming Suburbs in America.” Prairieville is a community known as much for its abundance of quality, affordable housing as it is for the many top-performing public schools located in and around its popular neighborhoods.
Local stores and distribution facilities are able to take advantage of the region’s close proximity to major interstates, a metropolitan airport and the Port of Greater Baton Rouge – one of the top 13 ports in the nation – which contribute toward lower costs of groceries and everyday household essentials. The costs of these basic goods and services, from dry cleaning and haircuts to dining, rank far lower in Baton Rouge than in other cities such as Birmingham, Atlanta and Dallas.
